As much as the success of the implant treatment, the care and oral hygiene the patient shows after the operation are also extremely important. In order for the implant to fuse completely with the bone and serve without problems for many years, the following rules should be observed.
The First 24 Hours After Surgery
- After the operation, bite firmly on the gauze your physician has given you to bite on for at least 45 minutes.
- Avoid taking hot baths and doing heavy sports activities on the first day.
- Avoid spitting and vigorous rinsing; this can disturb clotting and lead to bleeding.
- Do not use alcohol or cigarettes at all during the first 24 hours.
Implant Cleaning and Routine Care
Implants cannot decay, but inflammation of the gum and bone surrounding the implant (peri-implantitis) can cause implant loss. For this reason, implants too, just like natural teeth, should be brushed at least twice a day and supported with dental floss or an interdental brush. In addition, using an oral irrigator provides great convenience in cleaning implant-supported bridges.
